Restaurant Inspection Ordinance

Body

Palm Beach County has more than 2,000 dining establishments, and to ensure the safety, comfort and well-being of their patrons, each and every food/beverage service business is subject to a set of strict rules, regulations and guidelines.

The state requires all public food service businesses to undergo a rigorous on-site inspection at least once per year. These inspections are conducted by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The inspection results must be kept on the premises, and you, as a consumer, are entitled to read them. All you have to do is ask.

On January 1, 2007, an ordinance of the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners went into effect requiring establishments to post in plain view a notice advising customers that the latest inspection report is available upon request. If you encounter a restaurant, bar or other food/beverage service business that has failed to post such a notice, you may report via e-mail to pzbcode@pbcgov.org or call Palm Beach County Code Enforcement at 561-233-5500.

To report a business that has failed to provide its inspection report upon your request, please contact the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation via e-mail at Call.Center@dbpr.state.fl.us or call 850-487-1395.

Restaurant inspection reports may also be viewed on the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s Web site. Search by establishment name and be sure to enter the city in which they are located for best results.

Letter from Mayor Priscilla A. Taylor to Restaurant Owners

Dear Restaurant License Holder:

On January 1, 2007, Ordinance 2006-016 pertaining to food service inspection reports went into effect in Palm Beach County. This County ordinance requires any food service establishment licensed and inspected by the State pursuant to Chapter 509, Florida Statutes, to conspicuously post a notice on the entry door, on the window immediately adjacent to the entry door, or on the restaurant menu that includes the following statement:

LATEST FOOD SERVICE INSPECTION REPORT
AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST

If posted on a window or door, the notice shall be no lower than four feet from the ground to the bottom of the sign, and the notice shall be posted at each point of entry into your establishment. The notice shall be no less than 8 inches wide and 5 ½ inches in height and lettering shall be in a font type of no less than 36 pt. type in capital and bold letters. If the notice is posted on menus, the font type shall be no less than 14 pt. type.

This ordinance is part of Palm Beach County’s contribution to an overall effort of the State, County, and restaurant industry to provide greater consumer awareness of food safety standards in our area restaurants. It is intended to assist consumers in providing awareness of individual health and safety standards implemented in area eating establishments, and it will assist restaurant owners and managers in ensuring that only the highest quality of health and safety standards are met when serving your customers.

If you would like a copy of the complete ordinance, you may request one to be sent to you, or you can view it online.

Additionally, for educational support on food safety issues, prevention of food borne illnesses and understanding mandatory regulations, contact the Palm Beach County Cooperative Extension Service. Educational presentations are held throughout the year, free of charge. Call (561) 233-1742 for further information.

Thank you in advance for your compliance of this provision in county law.

Sincerely,
Priscilla A. Taylor
Mayor, Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners
